This how to will cover changing manual door mirrors for either Ford or
Aftermarket Electric Mirrors, and also covers how to change the door wiring
loom should you not already have the wiring fitted. Typically it's the LX that
does not have electric mirrors, but this does not mean that the wiring will/
will not be there. I myself, already had the wiring for the drivers side, but
not for the passenger side.
The fitting and wiring of the electric mirrors is not particularly difficult
and anyone should be able to do this with no problems.
All instructions are for UK passenger side, reverse left for right and vice
versa for drivers side

If, inside the door, either taped up, or pushed out of the way, you have a
small red plug with 5 small round pins on it, then you already have the wiring
and don't need to carry out this section. If you don't have the plug for the
mirrors, unfortunately you will need to swap out the whole door wiring.
1.
Carry out Removing Manual Mirror and Removing Door Panel
above |
2.
Roll the window all the way up, plugging the electrcic window switch back in if
need be.
Remove the foam block to gain access to the lower left side of the door. (can't
remember what it's called) |
3.
Unscrew the speaker from the door, and unclip the multiplug from the rear.
|
4.
Using a knife, cut away, and peel the foam weather shield from the bottom
halfway up the door, lift up and secure out of the way.
|
5.
You should now have access to the lower half of the door as best as is
possible. You will note the wiring for the door at various locations. Most of
it is clipped to the door using small plastic plugs (pictured below). These are
already provided on the new loom so all that is required is simply removing the
old and plugging in the new.
|
6.
Unplug the multiplug from the door lock mechanism (where the lock sits) and the
electric window motor (pictured) and pull on the wiring to remove the cable
clips from the door, taking care not to brake your hands or the window.
|
7.
If you have it plugged in, remove the electric window switch, You should have
the wiring for the window coming through a grommet on the front face of the
door and then clipped to the door, (shown below). Pull the clips from the door
and push the grommet back through inside the door.
|
8.
Unplug the connector between the door and the car by twisting it anti-clockwise
til it unplugs.
With the door lock mechanism unplugged, electric window motor unplugged,
electric window switch removed, and speaker plug unplugged, trace the wiring
and remove any more cable clips that are still attached to the door. |
9.
With the wiring free, pull the grommet from the end of the door, and withdraw
the wiring from the door. Noting the route of the wiring
around such things as electric window motor cables and brackets
|
10.
To fit the new loom, simply reverse the removal of the old loom Feed the plugs
in through the end of the door.
Routing the plugs along for the door lock and electric motor, plug them
in. |
11.
The new loom should have wiring for the electric mirror and electric window
switch, feed these up through the hole and put the grommet in place.
|
12.
Fit all the small black cable clips right along the wiring to the holes in the
door next to the corresponding clip
|
13.
Fit the grommet in the end of the door and plug in the multiplug that leads to
the car. |
14.
Replace the foam weather shield. Plug in and re-fit the speaker.
You should now have the door loom in place, cable clipped tidily to the door,
and be free of all moving parts. Everything should be plugged in apart from the
electric window switch and the electric mirror. Now would be a good time to
plug in the electric window switch and make sure the window works and doesn't
catch on any wiring. |
15.
You can, if you want, refit the door panel now, or leave it off til you get the
electric mirror fitted. If you do refit the door panel, make sure that the
electric mirror plug is out of the top of the door panel, and do not re-fit the
mirror covers yet. |
NB
The only difference for the drivers side should be the appearence of some of
the plugs. and there may also be extra plugs in there, such as the electric
mirror switch. |
1.
Follow steps above to remove manual mirror. |
2.
Offer new mirror to the car, feeding the wiring plug through the hole in the
door.
|
3.
Screw in the 10mm bolt to hold the mirror in place, and plug in the wiring to
the wiring from the door.
|
4.
If it's still off, refit the door panel.
For passenger side, fit the new internal mirror cover.
For drivers side, fit the mirror switch into the new internal mirror cover, fit
the multiplug into it, and refit the cover in the reverse order.
Fit external cover to the outside of the mirror unit, if you haven't already
done so. |
